Norris Geyser Basin: what to see & how to visit

Norris feels different from the open views around Old Faithful: pale ground, hissing steam and wooded paths connect a changing geothermal landscape. Choose the exposed Porcelain Basin, the longer Back Basin route, or time for both.

Our visit recommendation

Choose your Norris basin walk

Choose Porcelain Basin for a shorter introduction, then add Back Basin when you want more walking. Plan Norris as a self-drive visit unless your chosen tour explicitly names it; our selected classic Lower Loop tour is not sold as a dedicated Norris trip.

Walk Porcelain Basin

An open thermal landscape with a loop of about 0.75 mile. It gives you a compact introduction to Norris’s colors and steam.

Explore Back Basin

A longer, partly wooded circuit of about 1.5 miles, with scattered thermal features and the Steamboat Geyser area.

Look for Steamboat, without waiting on a promise

Visit the geyser as part of the basin walk. Its major eruptions are not a scheduled attraction like an Old Faithful prediction.

Porcelain or Back Basin?

Porcelain Basin is the shorter choice for travelers who want an open view of thermal activity. Back Basin spreads its features through a more wooded setting and adds walking. Doing both gives you variety, but it also uses time you might otherwise spend driving to a second region. Choose one loop first and decide on the other at the junction, based on the group’s energy and the day’s remaining plans.

02 · Visit planning

Give the walk room in your schedule

A useful approach is to make Norris the main walking stop in this part of the day, rather than a rushed photo beside the parking area. Bring water and layers, and keep your return drive in mind. Thermal boardwalks are maintained routes through active ground; stay on the marked paths and keep children close. Surface, steps and open sections can affect how comfortable the walk feels, so check current access for your group.

How Norris fits a West Yellowstone day

With the relevant roads open, reach Norris through the West Entrance and Madison area. Combine it with another stop along the same route rather than adding Old Faithful, Mammoth and Canyon simply because they appear nearby on a park map. If you want both Norris and a long visit elsewhere, spread them over two days. Road traffic and parking can turn a small addition into a much later return.

04 · Visit planning

Choose the stay, then the rest of the park trip

A town hotel works well for a self-drive Norris day followed by dinner in West Yellowstone. Desert Inn gives you a breakfast option; Explorer Cabins gives you a kitchenette for food before departure. On another day, a guided Lower Loop overview can cover a different set of highlights. If Norris is the essential stop on a guided day, agree that specific route with the operator before paying.

Your visit questions

Is Norris the same as Old Faithful?

No. They are different geyser basins. Norris has Porcelain and Back Basin routes; Old Faithful is in the Upper Geyser Basin.

Which Norris loop is shorter?

Porcelain Basin is about 0.75 mile; Back Basin is about 1.5 miles. Walking both is a longer visit, and current closures can change the available route.

Can I plan to see a Steamboat eruption?

Visit the feature without expecting a major eruption at a set time. Build the stop around the basin, rather than waiting for a guaranteed event.

Do the tours on this site include Norris?

Only book on that basis if the selected product explicitly confirms Norris. Our Lower Loop recommendations should not be treated as dedicated Norris tours.
