At a glance

Stay for the eruption. Leave time for the basin.

Make Old Faithful the main stop on a relaxed geyser day, or see it within a guided Lower Loop overview. Use the current eruption prediction and leave room to wait rather than planning your arrival to the minute.

Use a prediction window, not an hourly promise

Old Faithful is predictable enough for ranger estimates, but it does not operate to a fixed clock. Get the current prediction at the visitor center or through the official NPS information when available. A saved screenshot from another day is not a timetable. Arrive with enough flexibility to wait, and build the nearby walking into that wait rather than timing a drive to the minute.

The Upper Geyser Basin deserves its own time

The area contains boardwalk routes and many thermal features beyond the famous eruption. Choose a walking length that suits the group, carry water and stay on designated routes. If you want a broad park overview, a Lower Loop tour can make this one highlight of a guided day. If you want to linger over several geysers, self-driving with a lighter schedule may fit better.

03 · Explore

Choose the guided format that matches the visit

Choose the classic Lower Loop tour for an introductory day with short walks, breakfast and a picnic lunch. Choose the active tour if the Grand Prismatic overlook matters too. Both include Old Faithful as one part of a full circuit. For several hours exploring the Upper Geyser Basin, drive yourself and keep the rest of the day light.

04 · Explore

Pair it with the right overnight

A West Yellowstone hotel offers a town base before and after the excursion, but the entrance-to-attraction drive remains part of the day. For an early start, compare breakfast hours with departure time or choose a kitchenette for your own routine. In winter, use the winter access guide: the summer approach by ordinary vehicle is not the same as an oversnow excursion.
